How to write clear titles for business website pages

Website Rebuild guides · Published · 2 min read

A page title should help a reader distinguish one result from another. Write it from the page's purpose, not from a list of every keyword you hope to rank for.

Name the page's main subject

Write one sentence describing what the page helps the visitor do. Turn that into a concise title. For an illustrative redesign service page, “Website redesign services” is a clearer starting point than “Home” or a string of design, development and agency keywords.

Keep similar pages distinct

Review all titles together in a sheet. A Services page, package page and planning guide should not have identical titles. Add the detail that makes each useful: scope, decision or task. Include the brand briefly where it helps, without repeating a long slogan on every page.

Align the visible content

Compare the title with the main heading and body. A page titled as a pricing guide should actually explain pricing. Avoid dates, offers or locations that are not supported by the content. Google's guidance recommends descriptive titles and warns against repeated boilerplate and keyword stuffing.

Review the implementation

Ask the developer to confirm a title is present in each page's HTML. Check that special characters display correctly. Use a preview to spot unnecessary length, but do not treat a fixed character count as a Google rule; the displayed result can be shortened to fit the device.

Observe after publication

Google may use several page signals to generate the search title, so the displayed wording can differ from your HTML. If it is misleading, first inspect the title, main heading and prominent text for conflicting descriptions. Keep changes relevant rather than repeatedly editing to chase an exact display.

Use a title register with page URL, purpose and approved wording. It is especially useful during a redesign when old and new pages can otherwise inherit the same generic title. The test is whether someone can understand and distinguish the pages, not how many keyword variations fit into the tag.
