How to choose the pages for a small business website

Website Rebuild guides · Published · 2 min read

Five pages can be enough for a focused business website, but “five” is a scope decision, not an SEO rule. Choose pages by the questions customers need answered before they contact you.

Collect the recurring questions

List what people ask on calls and in enquiries: what you do, who you work with, where you operate, how the process works and what happens after contacting you. Group questions that belong to the same decision. A separate page is useful when it deserves its own explanation or customer journey.

Give each page a job

PageMain job
HomeExplain the offer and direct visitors to the right next step
ServicesClarify scope, fit and the process
AboutExplain who is responsible and provide truthful background
ContactProvide a working enquiry route and useful instructions
Additional pageAddress a substantial need, such as project examples or an important service

Decide what can share a page

Opening hours and contact details can usually sit together. Several closely related service variants may belong on one clear service page. Avoid splitting a short paragraph into separate pages just to fill a package allowance. Conversely, do not squeeze unrelated offers into an unclear page merely to avoid discussing extra scope.

Draw the route to an enquiry

On paper, sketch how a visitor moves from Home to the relevant service and then Contact. Add links where a question naturally occurs. A reader looking at a service should not have to return to the homepage to find out how to enquire.

Check the content before approving the map

For every page, name its audience, its main question, its owner and the content you already have. If two pages have the same answers and the same next step, review whether they should be combined. If a planned page has no usable content, either collect it or defer the page openly.

Send the page map with your brief and ask the developer to identify any missing functional pages. Privacy information and transaction policies may also need routes; confirm whether these count toward the quoted content-page allowance.
