CHOOSE THE RIGHT FEATURES

How to choose hosting for a business website

Website Rebuild guides · Published · 2 min read

Choose hosting after confirming what the website needs to run. A provider suitable for HTML files may not run the database or server software required by another project.

Ask for the runtime requirements

Have the developer identify the site type, build process, database needs and server-side features. List forms, uploads, customer accounts and scheduled tasks separately. A contact button linking to email does not have the same requirements as a form that stores messages.

Check compatibility before price

For a static site, confirm support for the file structure, custom domain, HTTPS, redirects and a useful missing-page response. For a CMS, ask whether the required software, storage and backup process are supported. Cloudflare Pages Direct Upload is designed for prebuilt assets; it is not a general replacement for every type of hosting.

Compare ongoing responsibilities

Write down who owns the account, who deploys updates and who handles renewal. Check relevant provider limits using the current documentation and account plan. Avoid relying on an old screenshot of a free-tier allowance. A hosting bill is only part of the operating cost if someone must also maintain software.

Require a tested preview

Ask the developer to deploy the agreed site to the proposed environment before binding the live domain. Test the actual enquiry route and important pages there. If a form relies on another provider, test that dependency too rather than treating a successful homepage load as proof of compatibility.

Keep a move plan

At handover, retain source files or the appropriate platform export, deployment notes and a record of dependencies. Ask what would need to change if you chose a different host. Some services make moving simple; others require rebuilding parts of the workflow.

The hosting choice is ready when the required features work, the account responsibilities are clear and recurring charges are understood. Do not cancel an existing host just because the new preview opens; finish migration checks first and retain a usable backup.
