How to choose a web design company for a scoped project

Website Rebuild guides · Published · 2 min read

Choose a web design supplier by how clearly they understand your project and explain delivery. A polished portfolio is useful, but it does not tell you who controls the accounts or how a broken enquiry route will be fixed.

Review relevant work carefully

Open two or three examples on a phone and try the navigation. Ask what the supplier actually did on each project. A demonstration concept should be identified as a concept. Look for similarity in the problem solved, rather than insisting that every example is from your industry.

Ask the same questions of each supplier

  • Who will do the work and handle feedback?
  • What exact pages and features are included?
  • How will I review a working preview?
  • Which content and account access do you need from me?
  • What files, permissions and setup notes will I receive?
  • What is the process for correcting defects after acceptance?

Test the communication

Give a concrete requirement, such as keeping an old service URL or using your existing booking provider. A useful answer explains the approach, limits and information needed. An instant promise without reviewing the details is not enough to establish feasibility.

Look for a reviewable proposal

The proposal should identify the supplier, scope, price, schedule assumptions and payment arrangements. Ask how missed content deadlines or extra requests are handled. Avoid relying on spoken claims that are absent from the document you are approving.

Make a small evidence record

Use one page to record what you saw and what remains unanswered. Do not invent a numerical score to disguise uncertainty. For example: “Mobile examples checked; source ownership confirmed; form delivery still needs clarification.” That is enough to guide the next conversation.

Once you have a suitable supplier, agree a brief and acceptance criteria before paying. Keep control of your own domain and use the provider's supported access process instead of sending passwords in email. A clear handover arrangement makes future changes less dependent on one individual.
